PC/Network Security -
Nothing is 100% percent secure. But being prepared for possible attacks on your computers or networks sure does reduce the risk of an intrusion. Taking the proper steps toward making your computer or network secure should be top priority in today's Internet world. Don't make your technology a prime target.
Computer Security - Home is where the Hackers are.
Many people think that PC security is mostly for large servers and high end machines, but any computer at your home or business is a potential target for intrusion. People on broadband connections like cable or DSL are even at more risk. Add a connection like broadband and a unsecured PC and you spell a hackers dream. However there are some steps you can take to make home or business PC attacks less likely.
-
If you are not on a network, or do not share resources on machines make sure your sharing features on your computers are turned off.
-
Try to utilize CD burners and disk to backup/archive your important information. If at all possible try not to save passwords or other important information in the computer.
-
If you own a paper shredder use
it! All documents whether you think are important or not
are a potential source of intelligence for hackers.
-
Never give personal information
over the phone for any reason. Social security numbers,
account numbers, usernames or passwords are treasure
droves for illegal activity.
-
If you do not have any PC
protection simply unplug your machine from the internet
when you are not using it. Though we do not suggest this
to be a solution, it may help until you can properly
protect your machine.
-
Invest in a online security program or group security bundle. The programs we suggest are Zone Alarm or BlackICE for firewall protection. Also for a bundled protection program with anti virus, Norton Internet Securities is very nice as well.
Network Security - Large Scale
Vulnerability.
For large networks we advise that your Network Administrator
be up to date on all patches and security vulnerabilities.
It would also help to keep access to your network to a
minimum. Investing in a office monitoring system could help
find potential users opening the door for hackers. Keep
tight wraps on emails and train your staff to recognize
potential dangers in the use of there PC's on the network.
Education is still the best weapon.
